The Arts Society Corinium were delighted to be able to providing funding for an art project developed by Stratton C of E Primary School around World Art Day and this year’s theme “Cultivating Community Through Art”.
The school commissioned the textile artist Emma Roch, who also does classes at the New Brewery Arts Centre, to create a new permanent artwork. Individual classes had art sessions with Emma in which they made fabric cut-outs of their hand outline and flowers. All of these cut-outs will then be combined by Emma into a textile picture to be hung in the school hall.
I attended one of Emma’s art sessions and the photos are taken from that art session. Throughout the art session the children were engaged and energised. The children clearly enjoyed the idea of their own hands (in fabric) being on the picture and a great deal of care was taken in cutting around paper patterns of their handprints. They also connected with the idea of how flowers could be created by layering fabric shapes of different colours together – some with leaves, some without.
It was an interesting art session not least because the children were working with a medium some wouldn’t normally associate with art. Also the children clearly enjoyed how individual simple shapes could be combined together to create something more intricate.
I very much look forward to seeing the final result of this project and an update will be issued in due course.
