Highnam & Nature in Art

Tuesday 12th March 2024

Full day visit to Holy Innocents Church, Highnam and Nature in Art, Twigworth, Gloucester

The Church of The Holy Innocents, Highnam was described by John Betjeman as “the most complete Victorian Church in this country”.  Commissioned by Thomas Gambier Parry and consecrated in 1851, the church was designed by Henry Woodyer and built in the gothic style.  The whole of the chancel, roof and much of the nave is covered in spectacular frescos, executed by Gambier Parry himself.  There are many other examples of excellent Victorian craftsmanship, including some impressive stained glass windows by Pugin (famous for his work on the Palace of Westminster). On arrival, there will be coffee, an introductory talk, with personal time to look around the church.

Nature in Art is the world’s first museum and art gallery dedicated to fine, decorative and applied art inspired by nature and housed in Wallsworth Hall, a fine Georgian Mansion.  As well as the amazing collection of paintings, sculpture etc, their main exhibition at the time of our visit is the annual globally renowned Wildlife Photographer of the Year, transferred from the Natural History Museum.

Shortly after arrival, we will be treated to a 2 course buffet lunch at about 12.30pm in the Hayward Coffee Shop, followed by an introductory talk on the history of Nature in Art, given by the director, Simon Trapnell.  Then there will be free time to view the photography exhibition and permanent displays as well as see the artist in residence, Olivier Leger working on his latest piece.  We will depart around 4pm.

Please note that at both venues, the coach will be able to drop us off fairly close but do be aware of some uneven ground around the church and extra layers may be required in the church depending on the weather at the time.  Sensible footwear is always recommended.
